Bineshiinyik (bin-EH-sheen-yick) means “Birds” in Anishinaabemowin.
We are a trio! Dedicated to regathering and the education of bird names and significant Indigenous bird knowledges, these knowledges that help us live the life The Great Lakes region has to offer, Mino Bimaadiziwin, A good life.
As part of our work we present talks and workshops for schoolboards, NGO’s, Governmental organizations, museums, and more!

About the Anishinaabe Bird Names Guides
Our resources have been developed over years of work with Anishinaabemowin speakers, bird biologists, ecologists and land-based knowledge holders. Each of our bird guides showcases a curated set of birds and their ecological significance as described through Anishinaabemowin.
Support
The first iteration of our resource is one we created in partnership with Birds Canada, Wiikwemkoong First Nation, and Environment and Climate Change Canada. This guide can be purchased directly from our website. It is printed on high quality paper that is UV resistant.
We have since released a laminated version of this resource that is weather resistant and ready for in-field use. This, along with our Winter Birds guide, can be purchased through our partners at the Outdoor Learning Store & School!
All proceeds from the sales of these guides go towards supporting the ongoing creation, publication and rediscovery efforts for Anishinaabe bird names across Anishinaabe aki. Gichi miigwech for supporting this work!

Joseph Pitawanakwat has worked extensively in hundreds of Indigenous communities and Hundreds of institutions throughout Anishinaabe territory collecting bird knowledge and names, and we know there are names out there that he has missed.
